“Turks in Berlin” is the name of the turkish people living in the city. It’s the largest ethnic minority group and the biggest community of turkish people outside of Turkey. 5,5% of the population has turkish origin or an immigration background, and there are over 40.000 kebab shops in Germany, 4.000 of which just in Berlin.Just by walking down any street in the city, it’s obvious that this street food is embedded in the German culture, and has been for a few years.

In Berlin, around 950 doner kebabs are eaten every day, amounting to around 60 tons of meat each year. Similarly, each year, around 70 million currywurst are produced, making them some of the most popular cheap eats in the city. Considering that there are more Turkish doner kebab shops in Berlin than in Istanbul, it’s fair to say that it’s quite appreciated in the area.
But first of all we feel like we ought to answer the one question that everyone’s asking: is it kebap or kebab?
Well, if you’re in Turkey (or in Germany) it’s kebab. Kebap it’s actually a Bulgarian word, meaning meat stews with few or no vegetables. Doner kebab (literally translated as rotating kebab) is the origin of numerous other dishes around the world (the Greek gyros, the Mexican tacos al pastor and the Middle Eastern shawarma just to name a few). The German-style Doner kebab sandwich (more commonly just referred to as kebab), was introduced by Turkish immigrants exactly in Berlin in the 1970s, when it started its climb as one of the most favourite takeaway foods, also considered nowadays a Turkish-German specialty, in Germany.

So it seems like a must trying it, whenever visiting Berlin! But with that amount of shops, how do we choose what’s the best place to try it?
In order to solve this question, we went there and tried them for you, and we’re happy to provide the results of such a challenge: the winner is Mustafa’s Gemuse Kebab. Even though he’s recently become even more popular due to his presence in the new Diesel advertising campaign, Mufasa’s kebab is a certainty of quality and true German-style street food.
Queuing up for a bit (sometimes more than an hour during lunch time) it’s actually worth it, and even though his recent fortune, he’s still loyal to his roots (also, no price change has been made during these months). His line in the whole spot is just one, but it’s everything we could have ever wanted “I am Mustafa. I make kebab.” Pretty self-explanatory, isn’t it?
